How to change your old lightbulbs to energy efficient lightbulbs

Over the past ten years it has become a no brainer to swop to energy efficient lightbulbs; they last 3 to 25 times longer, use 80% to 90% less electricity, and are more child friendly because they do not emit heat.

There have been large improvements to energy efficient lightbulbs. They used to have a reputation for taking time to switch on, having harsh white light, and being noisy. This has all changed with advances in technology. There is now no noticeable delay, the bulbs come in an array of soft colours, and they no longer emit a sound.

If you have been convinced to pay the short-term expense of an energy efficient lightbulbs for the long term savings, but you have never changed a lightbulb before, then follow this step-by-step guide.

1. Check which bulbs need changing

Before you get started, you'll need to know how many bulbs to buy, which sizes, and what lighting you want, for example soft or bright light. It could be useful to take your old lightbulb to the shops to ensure that you get the correct size and fit.

2. Go shopping

You can get lightbulbs online, and at many grocery stores, but for your first shop you might want to go to a hardware store. At a hardware store you may find a better variety of bulbs, and access to helpful advice. Ask or search for energy saving or energy efficient lightbulbs specifically. Some traditional lightbulbs are marketing themselves as more energy efficient when they are still leagues behind the energy use and long-lasting power of energy efficient lightbulbs.

Are you replacing a lightbulb in a tricky spot? While shopping, consider getting a ladder if you do not have one.

3. Clear the area

Maybe put down some newspaper depending on your flooring. Organise your ladder if necessary. Arrange your space so that you have safe, easy access to the lightbulb.

4. Make sure lights are off

Turn your lights off, this makes changing a lightbulb safer as you won’t get shocked or blow a lightbulb while the lights are off.

5. Remove the lamp covering and lightbulb

Remove the light shade, or whatever covers your lightbulb. Then remove the old light bulb by grasping the mental base and twisting it. It is less safe to hold the glass casing in case it breaks. Place the old lightbulb in a safe place.

6. Insert the new lightbulb

Take your new lightbulb out the box. Hold the metal base or glass bulb firmly but gently and twist the new lightbulb into the light.

7. Flip the switch

Does the light go on? If so, congratulations! If not, go through the steps again and try once more. Still struggling? Perhaps you need to find an electrician.

8. Clean up any dust

You are finished changing a lightbulb, well done! Finish off with a quick clean and a vacuum.

9. Discard your old lightbulb

Are you discarding an old lightbulb? Some lightbulbs contain mercury vapor so they must be disposed of safely. They should not be thrown away in general waste but should be taken to specific recycling centres, electrical appliance shops, or some grocery stores where they have marked bins to dispose of these lightbulbs safely.

Besides from changing behaviours, like turning lights off when you leave a room or using task lights, changing your lightbulbs to energy efficient ones is one of the simplest, most cost-effective ways to reduce energy consumption.
